Dear Mayor Vinis and City Council Members, Thank you for prioritizing health and climate issues by voting forward critical motions last July to move forward building electrification efforts in Eugene. I urge council to vote yes to transition all new homes and buildings off of fossil fuels. We need leadership from the council - to improve public health, create safer spaces for our families, and to combat the climate crisis. Wildfires, drought and air pollution are all symptoms of the climate crisis that we are experiencing today in Eugene. We simply cannot wait any longer to take action on a major source of climate pollution: Homes and buildings. Multnomah County recently recommended that residents consider moving off of gas appliances in light of mounting evidence of its considerable health harms. This report notes that cooking with gas creates unacceptably high levels of nitrogen dioxide pollution, triggering asthma and other respiratory problems, especially in children. New studies also show that gas stoves are leaking cancer-causing chemicals, including benzene, into homes, even while they are off. We know there's no safe way to live with gas. This dangerous fossil fuel is already causing great harm to our community, and particularly to vulnerable populations already overburdened by pollution and inflation - driven by the high costs of fossil fuels. Meanwhile, clean energy technology readily exists to replace gas - and it’s getting more affordable every day, while methane gas prices continue to rise. Eugene households that heat with gas are likely to see skyrocketing bills this Winter. The price of fossil fuels is simply too high – for our wallets, our health, and our children. Eugene is poised to take a meaningful step toward realizing our climate goals and we hope you will choose to lead Oregon toward the climate and health solutions our communities deserve.
